Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat – The Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office XII (DA-RFO XII) bolstered the livelihood opportunities of the Masiag Coffee Growers Agrarian Reform Cooperative (MACGARCO) with the formal turnover of a PhP 2.6-million Goat Multiplier Project in Barangay Masiag, Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat.
Funded under the National Livestock Program, the project features a newly constructed goat house, 48 upgraded goats, one forage chopper, as well as animal and zoological supplies. The intervention aims to expand the livestock-based livelihoods of local beneficiaries and strengthen overall agricultural enterprise development in the region.
The newly turned-over livestock project equips MACGARCO with the foundational assets needed to establish and scale a viable goat-raising business.
While the cooperative primarily focuses on coffee production, the livestock initiative offers a vital path toward enterprise diversification, giving farmer-members a secondary revenue stream to complement their seasonal coffee harvests.
“We will find ways to sustain the goats and keep them productive so that by December, we can share income with the farmers,” said MACGARCO Chairperson Jennifer Farillon.
The Goat Multiplier Project is expected to boost the regional supply of quality breeder goats, generate supplementary income for farmers, expand local livestock production, and build a more sustainable, resilient enterprise for the cooperative’s membership.
John B. Pascual, DVM, DA-RFO XII regional executive director, said the turnover highlights the agency’s ongoing commitment to empowering farmer organizations and agricultural cooperatives across Region XII through targeted capital interventions that elevate rural livelihoods and boost overall farm incomes.
“By expanding from coffee cultivation into livestock management, MACGARCO continues to broaden its agricultural footprint, paving the way toward a more diversified, productive, and economically resilient future,” Director Pascual added. (Aaron Benjamin T. Porras)
