#NextGenPlus | To identify and recommend the best-performing adaptive variety in the target ecosystems in the region, the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office 12, through its Research for Development Division and Tupi Research Outreach Station, held the Retooling and Regional Assessment of 2023–2024 Dry Season Implementation seminar to discuss the project “NextGen-Plus” on October 11 to 12, 2023, in General Santos City.
One of the project’s activities is to equip the project implementers and partners regarding the Participatory Performance Testing and Validation (PPTV) protocols.
Said seminar was attended by various implementers from agriculture stations, including the Municipal Agriculture Offices of Norala, Tantangan, Midsayap, Kabacan, M’lang, Glan, Maitum, and Esperanza.
Resource persons from the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) Central Experiment Station in Nueva Ecija presented the PPTV protocols, field plot techniques, collection of experimental data, insect diagnosis, and nutrient management.
The NextGen PLUS project is an initiative under the rice sector strategy of the DA and jointly implemented by the PhilRice and the International Rice Research Institute.
It uses recent advances in plant breeding, such as the use of molecular biology, stratified multilocation testing (MAYT), and improved computational power to make the country’s rice breeding program more efficient.
