#OnionDemoFarm | Aiming to be an onion-producing region in the country, the Department of Agriculture (DA) 12 established the SOCCSKSARGEN’s first onion demonstration farm.

This was officially launched earlier today, February 07 by Former Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol, DA 12 OIC Regional Executive Director Sailila Abdula and Agricultural Training Institute Director Abdul Daya-an.

Onion growers have witnessed the ceremonial planting spearheaded by DA and local government officials on the half-hectare demo area.
“Nabuo ang inisyatibong ito dahil sa pangangailangan natin… this will help the industry stabilize the price in the market and promote onion farming in our region,” director Abdula said.
For three months, participating private seed companies —East-West Seed Company Inc., Ramgo Internation Corporation, Kaneko Seeds Co., and Allied Botanical Corporation, will showcase the performance and yield of their onion varieties. This will aid the agency identify the suitability of the crop in Region 12.

According to Piñol, the demo farm targets to harvest 15 tons per hectare.
“Kaya natin maging food-sufficient basta kumpleto ang value chain,” former aggie chief said.
Aside from GenSan, another onion demo farm will be put up this year by the DA 12’s High Value Crops and Development Program in Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat.
