The integration of technology and digital tools in data collection has proven to be not just beneficial but essential for rice value chain analysis. Given the vast amount of information to be gathered from rice farmers, manual data recording would require significant time and resources, making the process inefficient and prone to delays.
Recognizing this challenge, the I-PLAN Component included a specialized training session on the use of Kobo Toolbox during a recent Value Chain Analysis (VCA) writeshop. The Kobo Toolbox is a powerful and versatile platform designed to streamline the creation and collection of data, particularly in remote or resource-limited areas. Its user-friendly interface allows for the design of complex surveys with a wide variety of question types, ensuring the comprehensive collection of high-quality data.
A standout feature of the Kobo Toolbox is its ability to support offline data collection, making it an invaluable tool in areas with limited or unreliable internet access. This ensures uninterrupted data gathering in the field, with the capability to upload collected information once connectivity is restored. Additionally, its robust data validation features help improve the accuracy and reliability of responses, minimizing errors that often arise from manual data entry.
Before participants engaged in the hands-on training, PSO Mindanao Planning Specialist Crishyl Ann P. Bilbao introduced the rice VCA questionnaire and survey manual. Participants from six regions reviewed the materials and provided critical feedback, leading to enhancements that will improve data quality and relevance in the field.
The training’s highlight was the practical session led by resource speaker Engr. Jay Miel Ajoc, who guided participants through simulation exercises and the formulation of surveys using Kobo Toolbox. By the second day, participants presented their own survey outputs, created using the tool, demonstrating their ability to apply digital solutions to rice value chain analysis.
This training marks a significant step forward in leveraging digital innovations to enhance data collection processes, ensuring that rice farmers’ insights are captured more efficiently and accurately. The use of Kobo Toolbox promises to accelerate the data collection process while improving the overall quality of analysis in the rice value chain, contributing to more informed decision-making and strategic interventions for the sector.
