#TriviaThursday | Did you know that a massive bluefin tuna was sold for almost 44 million pesos in Japan?

A 238-kilogram bluefin tuna fetched 114.24 million yen (PHP 44 million) during the New Year’s first auction of the Toyosu Market, in Tokyo, Japan on January 5. This is the fourth highest price since record-keeping began in 1999.

The tuna was caught off the coast of Oma in Aomori Prefecture, northeastern Japan. It was jointly bought by Tokyo-based seafood wholesaler Yamayuki and a Michelin-starred restaurant called Onodera in Ginza district .

The record still belongs to Kiyoshi “Tuna King” Kimura, a Japanese sushi restaurant chain owner, when he paid 333.6 million yen (PHP 125.8 million) for a 278-kilogram bluefin tuna in 2019.
