#DA12UrbanGardeningIsIn | In order to highlight the potential of urban agriculture in Region XII, the Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office 12 through the National Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture Program (NUPAP) recently conducted an insightful interview with two pioneering figures in the field: Christian Castañeda, proprietor of OrganiKian Urban Farm situated in Koronadal, South Cotabato and Mario C. Atillo from Surallah, South Cotabato.

Known as both an urban agriculturist and a resource speaker on topics such as urban gardening and hydroponics, Mr. Castañeda shared his experiences and insights into the economic advantages and personal benefits of urban gardening. Mr. Atillo, on the other hand, is renowned for his expertise as a local plant breeder specializing in Foliage Anthuriums. Together, they discussed the flourishing landscape of urban agriculture in South Cotabato and the services and impacts of their work on local urban farming.

The primary purpose of the interview was to showcase how urban gardening can be a viable livelihood option, even with limited land space, while also aiming to inspire the younger generation and out-of-school youth to explore similar ventures. Through the narratives of both Mr. Castañeda and Mr. Atillo, it became evident that urban farming presents a sustainable avenue for individuals to maximize their resources, generate income, and promote healthy living.
